Comparing Airbnb vs hostels in Lisbon for 6 nights, one was way cheaper
I booked an Airbnb for $45 a night near Alfama and then switched to a hostel at $22 a night after two nights, the difference was huge. The hostel had free breakfast and a shared kitchen so my food bill dropped by half, plus I met people who knew the cheap spots. Has anyone else found hostels beat Airbnbs in pricier cities or was it just my luck?

...and that's the thing a lot of people miss, it's not just about the bed price. The real money sink in Lisbon is eating out, and a hostel with a kitchen basically forces you to cook a few meals. Your food bill dropping by half is the exact math I've seen more times than I can count, especially in cities where grocery stores are cheap but restaurants are tourist traps. Hostels also tend to be in the older, more lived-in neighborhoods, while Airbnbs in spots like Alfama are often overpriced for what you get, just sayin. My rule of thumb now is simple, if I'm traveling alone or in a pair, hostel wins for six nights. With a group or family, then the Airbnb makes sense, but you're paying for space and quiet, not savings.
