Spreadsheet vs. pretty spreads, which actually keeps you going?

I started out doing these elaborate monthly layouts with washi tape and brush pens, looked gorgeous for about 2 weeks. Then I switched to a bare bones rolling weekly with just dates and task bullets, and I've kept up with it for 6 months straight. Does the minimal setup work better for anyone else long term, or do you find the pretty stuff worth the extra time?
