I finally stopped making excuses for my brother after 11 years of "borrowed" tools
Everyone in my life kept telling me cutting off my brother was too harsh, that family is family, and I listened to them for way too long. But here is what people get wrong about this whole thing: they think you have to wait for one big betrayal to walk away, when really it is a hundred small ones that wear you down. For me it was 11 years of him taking stuff from my garage, a $400 chop saw, two chainsaws, a brand new trimmer, and never bringing any of it back. The last straw came last April when I needed the chop saw for a job in Sacramento and he said he had no idea what I was talking about. My wife had been telling me for years to draw a line but I kept making excuses because he is my little brother. Six months of no contact later my garage is full, my stress is down, and honestly I do not miss him. So my point is stop waiting for permission from other people to cut someone loose, your gut already knows. Has anyone else had family members treat your stuff like a free rental service and act like you are the bad guy for caring?
