TIL that a $9 tone and probe beat my $60 tester on a 3-story drop in Mesa
Spent 3 hours on a dead line at a house in Mesa and got nowhere with my fancy line tester. The screen kept flipping between open and short every time I moved the clip. Grabbed my cheap tone generator and probe from the bottom of the bag just to rule it out. Tones came through clean right up to the splitter behind the panel. Turned out a staple pinched the shield about 40 feet up, and the probe let me hear exactly where the signal died. The tester wanted a perfect end to read, the probe just follows the noise. Simple beat fancy on that job. Curious what you all reach for first on a long drop, tone or tester?
Wait, a staple pinched the shield 40 feet up and you actually found it? That is wild. My brain still can't picture a staple doing that much damage from that far away. I would have bet money on a bad connector or water in the line before I ever guessed a staple. Guess that cheap probe paid for itself right there.
