Tried using a fishing rod to pull drop cable through a 40ft attic and it worked better than I expected
Last week I had a two story in Chandler with a vaulted ceiling and no clear path from the panel to the back bedroom, and I was about to tell the customer we'd have to run conduit on the outside of the house. Instead I taped an old fiberglass fishing rod to a pull string and threaded it through the soffit vent, and it slid right over the insulation and down the wall cavity on the second try. I've always used glow rods for attic work but they're stiff and only reach so far, and this rod is 7 feet collapsed and flexes around corners without snagging on nails. The whole thing took me about 25 minutes instead of the 3 hours I'd budgeted for an exterior run, and the customer was thrilled because she didn't want to look at conduit from the street. I did learn to tape the string at the very tip with electrical tape so it doesn't peel off when you bend the rod back. Only downside is the rod can whip back if you pull too hard, so slow and steady is the rule. Has anyone else tried this or do you all just swear by the 15 foot glow rods?
