Last week a customer's ratty Pentax spotmatic taught me I've been cleaning viewfinders all wrong for 3 years
Honestly I've been fixing cameras at my kitchen table in Sacramento for about 3 years now and I thought I had my viewfinder routine down cold. Last Tuesday a guy dropped off a Spotmatic he got at an estate sale, super hazy finder, and I did my usual q-tip and alcohol pass like always. After 20 minutes the haze just smeared around instead of coming off so I got frustrated and tried a tiny drop of dish soap on a fresh swab. The gunk lifted in like 8 seconds flat and I just sat there staring at it. Turns out the haze was old skin oil and nicotine film from decades of use, not dust, so alcohol was basically just pushing it around. Now I'm wondering what else I've been doing backwards this whole time, has anyone else had a cleaner backfire like that before it clicked?
