TIL my scoutmaster in Tucson said a cheap foam pad beats my $200 sleeping pad in cold, and I think he might be right
Last weekend I camped near Mount Lemmon with a guy who has slept outside more nights than I have hot dinners, and he pulled out this $15 closed cell foam pad while I set up my fancy inflatable one. He said the foam never pops, never leaks, and works down to 20 degrees no matter what, and sure enough his setup was warmer than mine by 3am. So here is my thing: has anyone else gone back to basic foam after years of buying the expensive pads?
Switched back to foam two winters ago after my third inflatable got a pinhole from who knows what. I was in the Catalinas and my pad went flat by midnight, coldest night of my life. Now I run a plain blue foam pad, the $20 kind, and I've never slept warmer. It doesn't pack small and it's not comfy like a cloud, but it can't fail on you. That trade is worth it when it's 15 degrees out and you just want to sleep.
