Appreciation post: the student paper at Kent State printed the counter-protest flyer word for word and it actually calmed things down
Last month a group came to campus to protest a speaker and a bunch of students wanted the paper to cover the fight, but instead the editors printed the protest group's own flyer in full, unedited, right next to the speaker's event info. A lot of people online called that giving hate a platform, but it did the opposite. About 200 students read the flyer's actual claims, saw how thin they were, and the counter-protest turnout dropped from what looked like 150 planned down to maybe 40. I know because I was on the student government group chat watching the headcount updates all afternoon. The thing people keep getting wrong is thinking coverage always boosts a bad idea. Sometimes daylight is the whole point, and the paper trusted readers to see it for themselves. Does anyone else have a campus story where just printing the thing deflated it instead of pumping it up?
