TIL our student paper went from 3 opinion pull quotes a month to 14 after we stopped pre-clearing them with the adviser
Back in September our editor started running every controversial column past the faculty adviser before print, and the op-ed page basically died, just safe takes about parking and dining hall hours. In January we changed the rule so the adviser sees the page but can't kill a piece, and since then we've run pieces on the Gaza vigil, a professor's tenure fight, and one column that got a formal complaint from a dean, and readership on the op-ed page doubled. Has any other paper here tried this setup, and how did you handle the first angry email from admin?
