Joked about a plane crash at the airport bar and got the death stare from the bartender

Was waiting on a delayed flight out of Denver last month, sitting at one of those airport bars. Some small plane had gone down a few days before, nobody died, made the news local. I said something like "well at least that flight won't be late" to the guy next to me. Bartender heard it, stopped pouring my drink mid-pour, just stood there staring at me for like 10 seconds. Felt like I was in trouble with my mom. Is that one of those things where you just can't joke about it because of timing or is it permanently off limits now?

Bartender was being dramatic honestly. Like yeah plane crashes are serious but nobody got hurt in that one and you were clearly just making a joke about the airline being slow. That's pretty standard airport small talk in my experience. People get super weird about death and flying especially if they work around planes all day. I think some folks just can't handle dark humor at all which is fine but don't give someone the evil eye over it. You didn't say anything offensive or mean.

Wait @kim.nina did the bartender actually give you the evil eye over that?

My buddy told a joke about a blimp crash once and the whole bar went dead silent.
