That comedy club in Tulsa made me feel like a jerk for laughing

Went to a show last Saturday, nothing fancy, just a local open mic. One guy did a whole bit about airplane peanuts and then a bit about his mom's cancer. The peanut joke killed, the cancer one got dead silence. He looked so crushed up there. I laughed at the peanut one but now I'm wondering if I should've laughed at anything at all. Is laughing at the safe parts of a sensitive set still okay, or does that just open the door for the heavy stuff? Has anyone else sat through one of these and felt weird afterward?

Laughing at what's funny doesnt mean you're approving the rest.

Laughing at a joke doesnt mean you're signing off on the whole package, sure, but it does kinda show where your line is. People notice who's willing to crack up at the dark stuff and it sticks. Mileage varies, but I see it as a little more loaded than that.
