Vent: my coworker's 9/11 joke at the Denver office happy hour split the table and I still don't know if I should have laughed
So last Thursday I was at a work happy hour at a bar on Larimer St in Denver, about 10 of us from the office, and one guy who I barely know told a 9/11 joke after his third beer. Half the table laughed, like actual laughing, and the other half just went dead quiet and stared at their drinks. I did that awkward half chuckle thing where I honestly did not know what to do with my face. The joke itself was not even that clever, it was just shock value, but the fact that 5 people laughed out loud at it is what got stuck in my head all weekend. One woman at the end of the table said 'too soon' and the guy just shrugged and said it's been over 20 years, which honestly is a fair point on paper. But 20 years or not, two people at that table probably know someone who was there or lost someone, including a guy on my own team whose uncle was NYPD. I keep going back and forth on whether the ones who laughed were rude or whether I'm being too sensitive about a joke that hurt nobody at that specific table. Where do you all draw the line on tragedy jokes, is it about who's in the room or is it about the joke itself?
