A 30-year installer in Cleveland told me my stretching was garbage and I argued before I tried it
I used to be the guy who swore by knee kicking the carpet tight and calling it good. Then a guy named Ray with 30 years in the trade watched me finish a berber job in Cleveland and said flat out, "that's gonna wrinkle by spring, you're stretching the air not the backing." I got defensive at first, I mean who wants to hear that on a Tuesday morning. But he made me pull the power stretcher out and redo the whole room with a proper tail and pinless head, and the difference in how tight that backing sat was night and day. He said my problem was I was rushing the stretch and never checking for slack along the walls before trimming. Now I don't lay a room without tailing it right and walking the perimeter twice, and I have not had a callback on a stretch in 14 months. Maybe it's just me but I think a lot of us learn the fast way and never go back. Anybody else get humbled by an old timer like that?
