Bought a $340 power stretcher off a retired guy in Fresno and it saved my back on a 60 yard job
Picked up a used Crain stretcher from a guy who hung it up after 30 years in the trade, paid $340 cash and figured it was worth a shot on the big rental I had booked for last weekend. Did 60 yards of berber through four rooms without the knee kicker beating me up, and the seams laid flat with zero bubbles, which never happens when I stretch by hand on stairs. What's the one tool you dropped real money on that either paid for itself or turned out to be junk?
You really think a $340 tool is what made that job go smooth? Come on. A power stretcher is only as good as the guy running it, and if you don't know how to set your pins right or read the carpet backing, that thing will rip seams faster than a knee kicker ever would. I've seen guys buy every fancy tool on the truck and still leave bubbles because they never learned to stretch to the right wall first. Berber hides nothing either, so if your seams laid flat that's you knowing what you're doing, not the Crain. That stretcher sat in some guy's garage for 30 years for a reason, and half the time the "deal" is just someone else's junk with a fresh coat of oil on it.
