The $46 convenience fee that made me question tap-to-pay
Last month I went to a food truck festival in Austin and forgot to grab cash. Every vendor had those card readers that beep when you tap your phone. It felt great for about an hour, then I checked my bank app and saw four separate $2 convenience fees plus a $38 charge from one truck that added a 12% 'digital processing' tip without asking. I had zero receipts, just digital breadcrumbs that took me 20 minutes to track down. The worst part was when I called my credit union, they said the merchant can set any hidden fee they want and it's legal. I get that cash is messy, but at least what you see is what you pay. Has anyone else been burned by these hidden digital surcharges at small events, or is there a way to fight back I'm missing?
Heard the exact same thing from my buddy who hit up a taco pop-up, got slapped with a 15% surcharge he only noticed when the guy handed him the iPad screen already flipped around. He tried to dispute it, and the vendor just shrugged and said the fee was for "convenience," so now he just asks for the paper total before he taps.
