Went full digital wallet for a month in Austin, now I'm torn about the alerts
I tried using only my phone to pay for everything in Austin for 30 days. Every coffee, taco, and bus ride left a timestamped trail, which was cool until my bank pinged me at 2am about a $4 vending machine charge. On one hand, I caught a subscription I forgot about instantly, but on the other, my partner now jokes I'm on a leash because she can see every late-night snack. Is constant tracking a fair trade for catching fraud that fast, or does it creep anyone else out that our spending habits are basically public data for the banks? What's your line between convenience and privacy?
...and honestly the leash thing is kind of the point, right? Banks have been watching every swipe for decades, the phone just made it visible to us. The 2am vending machine ping is annoying but it also means they caught that weird charge before you even woke up. I'll take a few annoying alerts over finding out my card got skimmed two weeks later. Privacy died the moment we all started paying with plastic anyway, so at least this way I get something back for it.
