Why does nobody talk about the fee that hits when you tap your card at a farmers market stand?
I bought a $4 jar of honey at the Des Moines market last Saturday and noticed a 3 percent surcharge pop up on the little card reader screen, which the seller said she eats herself since she can't pass it on. That means on a cashless day she hands over a cut of every single sale to the payment app company, and most shoppers never even see it. How do you all factor in those hidden cuts when you decide whether to pay with a card or with cash at small stands?
That 3 percent on a $4 honey jar means she's basically paying the card company a spoonful of her own product. Shoppers swipe away and never see the little tax that comes with the tap. I just carry a few bucks now, mostly so the seller keeps the whole thing.
