Rant: I watched a guy at the Fayetteville farmers market haggle a $3 bag of carrots down to $1.50 and now I can't decide who was right
So last Saturday at the Fayetteville farmers market I'm standing behind this older guy at a produce stand, and he talks the vendor down from $3 to $1.50 on a bag of carrots that were already marked down because they were the last of the day. The vendor sighed and took it. Half of me wanted to clap because that's how you get cheap food and the carrots were clearly headed for the compost anyway. The other half of me felt bad, because this is a small farm that drives in from Prairie Grove every week and that buck fifty is real money to them. I've been going back and forth on it for days. One side says haggling at the end of the market is fair game and everyone knows it. The other side says the grocery store would've charged twice that and you don't haggle at Kroger, so why squeeze a farmer. I grabbed my onions and paid full price and felt like a chump either way. Is there a line here, like haggle on the last hour stuff but not on the first pick, or is it all just fair play?
