Bought a $12 rice cooker at a church sale in Tucson and it does more for my food bill than my slow cooker
I know people love their slow cookers but I'm calling it: a cheap rice cooker is the better buy when money is tight. I got mine for $12 at a church sale in Tucson six months ago and I use it maybe four times a week. Rice plus a fried egg plus whatever frozen veg is on sale feeds me for under a dollar a plate, and I don't have to plan hours ahead like I do with the slow cooker. Add a can of black beans and some cumin and it's a real meal, not a sad one. My grocery bill dropped from about $75 a week to $50 and I eat better now. What's the one cheap kitchen thing you reach for way more than you expected?
Rice cookers are stupidly underrated. Mine cooks rice, steams veg in the basket on top, and I've even done oatmeal in it. The set-and-forget thing beats the slow cooker since it shuts off on its own instead of me worrying about it all day. Cheap and it just works.
