A simple creosote log jam took me 5 hours on a 70 year old chimney

Customer in Boise called about smoke backing up. I figured standard blockage near the flue. Turns out a chunk of old firebrick had shifted and wedged a creosote shelf at a weird angle. My rods kept bouncing off it. Took me 5 hours with a camera, a pry bar, and finally a rotating chain kit to bust it loose. Has anyone else dealt with firebrick collapse that made a routine sweep into an all day job? How do you spot that risk before you start?
