Showerthought: I swapped my 22 mile daily drive for a bus pass in Boise and tracked every trip for 2 months
Two months ago my car died and I had a choice: fix the transmission for about $2,800 or buy a $60 monthly bus pass and try it for 60 days. I picked the bus pass mostly out of panic, and honestly the first week was rough since my commute jumped from 25 minutes to 50. But I logged every single trip in a notebook, and by week 6 I was reading a book on the way in and not paying $9 a day in gas. I added up the receipts and the pass plus the occasional rideshare came to around $190 for the whole 2 months. The one thing I did not expect was how much I started noticing the bus route cuts through neighborhoods near downtown Boise that are getting new bike lanes. Curious if anyone here has tried a car-free month in a smaller city and what broke down first for you?
My version of tracking every trip would be a notebook with three entries and a lot of blank pages, so props for actually sticking with it. The part about noticing bike lanes you never saw from a car got me, since you miss a ton of your own city at 40 mph. Week 6 is about where my half-baked plans usually fall apart, so what kept you going?
