Does a dirty portafilter actually change the taste, or is it all in our heads?
My buddy from Spokane swore he could tell the difference after I skipped the backflush for 2 weeks, but another guy at the shop laughed and said it's just placebo... so I ran a blind test with 4 people and 3 of them picked the clean one, but honestly I'm not sure that proves anything. Has anyone else done a real side-by-side like this, or are we all just making up reasons to deep clean?
Four people and three picks is barely a trend, especially if you knew which was which before pouring. I mean, how long did you wait between cups, because oil buildup mostly hits the first shot and evens out after that. Seems like a lot of ritual for something you could fix with a rinse and a wipe.
