My 30 year old driveway looked like a bad patch job until we ran a test slab in the corner
I inherited a driveway that had been patched at least 6 times by the last owner and honestly I was ready to tear the whole thing out and start over. Before I did that, I poured a small 3x3 foot test slab in the corner using a mix with a bit more portland and a water reducer, just to see if the old surface was the problem or my finishing was. Three weeks later the test slab was smooth and tight while the rest of the drive was still showing hairline cracks along the old patch seams. Turns out the old guy had been adding water at the truck to stretch the pour, which jacked up the shrinkage and left those seams weak from day one. I ended up grinding the seams out, filling with a sand and cement slurry, and capping the whole thing with a thin bonded overlay, and the difference after two months is wild. The cracks have not come back in the test area so I am about to do the full drive. What mix ratio are you guys running for a bonded overlay on old concrete that has been patched a bunch, and do you bother with a bonding agent or just go wet on wet?
