Can we talk about the tape measure trick for drywall cuts

I have been hanging drywall for about 6 years and always used the old mark and snap method. Last week on a job in Tacoma I watched this kid use the edge of his speed square to score the back side before cutting. I laughed at first but then he cut a perfect out let hole in like 20 seconds flat. So I tried it on the next sheet and the face paper didn't tear at all. It made me realize I have been fighting the material for years when the fix was just flipping the blade angle. The boss said it looks cleaner and we saved maybe 2 hours on that whole room. Has anyone else switched up a basic trick that made them feel dumb for not trying it sooner?
