Dropped $180 on a magnetic sweep rake last fall and it paid for itself on one job
I do a lot of deck and fence work, and pulling screws and nails out of the grass after tearout used to eat up an hour every time. Bought a 36 inch magnetic rake for about $180 last fall mostly out of frustration, sort of figured it was overpriced for what it is. First job with it was a deck tearout in Cedar Rapids and I kid you not, we cleared the whole yard in under 15 minutes and pulled up stuff I know we would have missed with the old roll around magnet. Client walked the yard after and actually said she could not believe there was nothing left. The rake has paid for itself a few times over just in time saved, plus no flat tires on the mower trailer. Anyone else got a tool that cost more than you wanted but turned out to be worth every penny?
That part about pulling up stuff the old roll around magnet would have missed is the whole ballgame right there. I had the same thing happen with a cheap stud finder years ago, thought I knew where the studs were until the thing showed me I was off by two inches on a whole wall. Makes you wonder how much other work we do on autopilot and just never catch it.
