Chose between balayage and a root smudge for a client with box dye, and now her hair is orange at the ends

She came in with 8 inches of old box black and I picked balayage over a root smudge, but when I lifted it the mid lengths grabbed way too warm, so what do you all do to fix banding without frying the ends?
