Ran a 60 foot boom for 3 years before a guy in Tulsa asked why I never boomed down to pick
I always telescoped out to full length before swinging and wondered why my chart kept coming up short on radius. He told me to pick the shortest boom that reaches, and my capacity jumped almost 40% on the same lift.
That Tulsa guy gave you solid advice. Shortest boom that reaches is the first thing I check every lift now. Every extra foot of boom adds weight and kills your chart at a given radius. The load chart is built around boom length and radius together, so running long boom when you don't need it is just throwing capacity away. I had a foreman chew me out for the same thing years back on a truss pick. Telescoped in, capacity went way up, same lift, same spot. The chart does not lie, you just have to give it the best numbers to work with.
