Outline-first plotting beats discovery writing every single time for me
I spent 2 years doing discovery writing on a novel set in Portland, and it took me 2,000 pages of drafts to find a plot. Then I tried a rigid 3-act outline with scene cards for a short story, and I finished it in 6 weeks. The outline forced me to make choices before I got attached to pretty prose that went nowhere. Discovery fans say it's more organic, but I found it just meant more rewrites and wasted weekends. Does anyone else find that outlining kills the fear of the blank page, or do you genuinely thrive on the chaos of writing blind?

Honestly, the "attached to pretty prose that went nowhere" part hit way too close to home. I did the same thing for a year, fell in love with scenes that had zero plot purpose, and had to kill all of them anyway. Having a roadmap, even a loose one, stops you from polishing chapters that are just dead ends.
