Paid $25 for a deleted Reddit thread archive, got a password-protected zip
I bought a bundle from some guy on a Discord server who claimed he had a full archive of a subreddit that got nuked in 2022. He sent me a zip file, but it was locked with a password he never provided after the payment went through. The Discord server shut down two days later and his username vanished. Has anyone else had luck recovering deleted subreddit archives from third-party sellers, or am I just throwing money away on scammers?

...wait, hold on. Did you try checking the zip file for any hidden clues before he disappeared? Like, sometimes these guys leave the password in the file name or in the archive comments section, even if the Discord is gone. Ive seen that happen a couple times with game mods and stuff, but if that failed, then yeah, you got burned. The bigger question is how did you even find this guy, was it a server you trusted or just some random invite? Cause if it was a random invite, that's your first red flag right there. These archive sellers pop up in a million servers, take cash, and vanish all the time, it's basically their whole business model. I mean, theres free tools like Pushshift and other public archives that might still have the old data, but if the sub was nuked hard, even those're spotty at best. Honestly, your best move is to treat that $25 as a lesson and maybe ask around on Reddit or other Discords for people who actually share archives for free instead of selling em...
