My 'free' website migration cost me $1,200 and two clients
Thought I'd save money by moving our small biz site from the old host to a cheaper one myself. Took me 3 days of fighting with DNS and SSL certs, then realized all our email routing was breaking. Lost two recurring contracts because orders went to a dead inbox for a week. Paid a local freelancer $1,200 to fix it in 4 hours. Anyone else ever try to DIY hosting and end up paying more than the original setup?

Man, that's rough, but I gotta push back a little here. The problem wasn't DIY hosting, it was jumping in blind without a plan. Anyone can watch a YouTube video and copy commands, but DNS and email routing are the parts that bite you when you don't understand the moving pieces, you know? Three days without checking that inbox, that's the real killer, not the host itself. I've done a couple of these moves for my own stuff and the trick is to keep the old host live for a week, run both at once, and only cut over when the new one's proven itself. Sounds like you paid $1,200 for a lesson in testing before ripping the Band-Aid off, which stings, but it's a cheap one compared to doing it wrong again.

Honestly @ryanm60, never thought of it that way, but keeping both hosts live is the smartest move I've heard.
