TIL my VPN saved me from a hotel Wi-Fi scam in Chicago last weekend
I was staying at a Marriott near O'Hare and connected to the free Wi-Fi without thinking. Next morning I saw a $40 charge on my card for 'room service' I never ordered. Called the front desk and they said my room number matched an order from a different floor. My VPN was on the whole time, so my session was encrypted, but the hotel's network had a phishing page that mimicked their login. I still don't know how they got my card number - has anyone else dealt with fake hotel Wi-Fi portals?

That phishing page probably grabbed your card from autofill before you even hit connect to the real network.

The receptionist at a hotel in Chicago last year gave me the wrong key card three times. Ended up walking into a stranger's room while they were changing. That was more embarrassing than any scam.
