My dad's 1994 jar of pickled eggs finally got tossed last weekend
That jar sat in the back of my parents' fridge for 30 years. The liquid turned from clear to this weird brown sludge around 2010, and the eggs just floated there like little science specimens. Mom finally got sick of looking at it when she cleaned the fridge out before Thanksgiving. Dad was oddly quiet about it, like he lost an old friend. Anybody else's parents hold onto weird fridge stuff for decades?

Pulled a jar of green olives out of my aunt's fridge that expired in 2006.

Nah I gotta disagree here. 2006 olives are probably still fine. Olives are basically pickled in brine and salt, that stuff doesn't really go bad in a traditional sense. The worst thing that happens is they get a little mushy or the flavor fades but they're not gonna hurt you. I've eaten way older stuff from my own grandparents' pantry and nothing happened. People throw away perfectly good food because they see a date on the jar and freak out. The expiration dates are just suggestions anyway, especially for anything canned or jarred. Unless there's visible mold or the jar is bulging, those olives are safe to eat.
