A guy at the hardware store told me my idea for a future city was just a bigger suburb and it clicked.

Bigger suburb" is a pretty good burn, honestly. But a future city should probably be more than just... more of the same thing we already have.

Read an article about this exact thing. It said a lot of new "urban" spots just have the look but not the life. They put in fancy benches and wide sidewalks but no reason for people to actually stop and talk. Honestly feels like building a movie set instead of a real place. That truck driver uncle nailed it. If it doesn't feel messy and lived-in, it's just a show.

A friend of mine spent months designing this perfect, walkable neighborhood for a class project. He showed it to his uncle, a truck driver who sees a lot of the country. The uncle just said it looked like a really clean mall with apartments. It totally deflated him, but he said it was the most useful feedback he got. It forced him to ask if he was building a community or just a nice-looking set of buildings. That hardware store guy might have done you a similar favor.
