Hot take: I think recycled glass is overrated for fine art pieces

A lot of glassblowers push recycled cullet as the green option, but I find it messes with my work. When I use it for detailed sculptures, the inconsistent texture often causes weak spots or breaks. Just last year, a commissioned piece failed because impurities in the recycled batch created stress points. The energy to clean and sort it might not even save that much compared to new glass. I believe we're better off perfecting our techniques to use less material overall. Focusing only on recycled sources can lead to more waste if pieces don't turn out right. Let's not forget that sustainability includes making things that last, not just using green materials.

I mean, I get the purity thing for sure, but I've had good luck with really clean sourced cullet. Maybe it's just me, but some batches are fine for smaller details.

My friend's vase cracked straight down the middle from bad cullet.

Impurities in my last batch totally wrecked the structural integrity.

Used to be all about recycled glass for my art... thought it was the only way to be responsible. A big bowl I was making for a show just shattered in the annealer from a tiny bubble in the cullet. Now I see how chasing the green label can actually ruin good work.
