Figured out my shower leak was a $4 part, not a $400 job, thanks to a plumber at the hardware store
So our upstairs shower had been dripping for about three weeks and the water bill jumped $18, which is how I finally noticed it. I had myself talked into a whole new shower valve and was ready to get quotes, but I swung by the hardware store on Georgia Street to grab pipe tape anyway. The older guy at the counter asked what I was working on, and when I said the valve was toast, he told me to pull the handle and look at the cartridge first because nine times out of ten it is just a worn out O-ring on the back of it. Took me all of ten minutes to shut the water off, pull the cartridge, and sure enough there was a chewed up little rubber ring back there for $4. Swapped it, put everything back, and the drip stopped that night. I still checked the wall for moisture for a few days just to be safe, and it stayed dry. Anyone else had a small fix save them from calling somebody, or am I the last person on earth to learn to check the cheap part first?
