I figured pine 2x4s were fine for a workbench top until I saw one after 8 months in my garage
Built my workbench out of plain pine 2x4s about 8 months ago because it was cheap and I figured wood is wood. Last weekend I finally flipped the top after an oil leak and the underside had cupped and split along three boards, plus there were dents deep enough to hold a marble from just setting tools down on it. A neighbor down the street in Amarillo showed me his bench with a doubled 3/4 inch plywood top and a hardboard sheet on top, and it was dead flat after two years of real use. I'm swapping mine over this month, but has anyone used the melamine coated stuff instead of hardboard for the top layer?
