Pro tip: the $6 shutoff valve that saved my laundry room floor on Saturday
Was swapping the fill hoses on the washer Saturday morning, and the old cold valve crunched shut and started weeping out of the packing nut. Old house off Wolflin, everything is original it seems. I shut off the main at the street, ran to the hardware store on 6th, and grabbed a quarter turn ball valve and a couple of SharkBite fittings for about $6 each. Only snag was the copper stub was too short to cut clean, so I had to sweat a short piece on with a torch I borrowed from my neighbor. Took me 4 hours total including two trips for the right size fitting, but the floor is dry and the wife did a load without a puddle. If your washer valves are the old multi turn style, check them before they check you. Has anyone swapped one of these without killing the main, or is that just asking for trouble?
