PSA: I voted for the facial recognition ban in our town and now I think I was wrong
Six weeks ago our city council in Rockford passed a rule that keeps police from using facial recognition, and I was one of the loudest people pushing for it. Then a guy I know got his truck stolen off his own driveway, and the cameras caught a clear face that nobody could legally run. I sat with that for a few days and admitted to myself that I had been treating the tech as the problem instead of the rules around it. A blanket ban feels good to vote for, but it also means no oversight, no limits, no accountability, just nothing. Does anyone here think a strict permit system with public logs would beat an outright ban, or am I fooling myself?
