Disagree with the whole premise here. Telling someone "at least you have other pets" isn't some cold thing, it's actually trying to help them see they're not totally alone in the world. Sometimes people need a little nudge toward the good stuff instead of everyone just sitting around saying "that sucks" together. That neighbor's line about feeling WITH someone sounds nice but it can also keep a person stuck in the bad feeling longer. I've had friends who appreciated the "at least" comments because it reminded them things weren't all bad. Empathy gets praised like it's always the right move but honestly it can just drag you down with the other person. The "at least" guy might be doing more good than anyone gives him credit for lol.
