Overheard my neighbor explaining the difference between empathy and sympathy and it hit weird
I was watering my plants on Sunday and my neighbor across the fence was telling her kid why he should say 'that sucks you lost your dog' instead of 'at least you have other pets'. She said sympathy is feeling FOR someone, empathy is feeling WITH them, and it clicked for me. I've been the 'at least' guy my whole life and probably made a few people feel worse without meaning to. Anyone else realize they've been doing the wrong one this whole time, or is it just me?
