That AI therapy bot I trashed actually helped my buddy through a divorce

I spent 6 months telling my friend Dave his AI therapist was a gimmick. He paid $30 a month for some app called MindEase and I laughed every time he mentioned it. Then he showed me the transcript where it called him out for avoiding his feelings about his ex-wife. It caught details he swore he never told it. I still think it's weird but I can't argue with the results. Has anyone else seen these bots surprise people?

An app calling him out isn't the same as real therapy.

Honestly, did Dave ever figure out how the app knew things he never told it? That part creeps me out more than anything. Like, are they scanning texts or something else from his phone? Would be curious if he actually checked the privacy settings or just assumed it was magic.

Most people don't realize those apps grab data from other sources you already gave permission to years ago. Things like your photos, calendar events, or even wifi networks you connect to can tell them a lot. If Dave ever used Facebook or Google login for anything else, that's another door wide open. The app doesn't need to scan texts when it can just look at what time he's active or what other apps he uses most. Checked my own permissions after that story and found three apps reading my contacts for no good reason.
