The weekend I watched a robot barista fumble my oat milk order
Last Saturday I was killing time at a new coffee spot in Austin, the kind with the big robotic arm behind the counter. I watched it pull espresso shots and steam milk for like 15 minutes, honestly impressive for a machine. Then a guy orders an oat milk latte and the arm grabs the wrong carton, sends it sliding across the counter, and tries again. The second time it worked but the cup was only 80% full, and the barista supervising just shrugged at me like that's normal. It made me wonder if we're pushing automation into service roles before the edge cases are really solved. I'm all for AI doing boring tasks, but coffee orders have so many tiny variables. Has anyone else seen these bots fail at something that seems simple? Maybe I'm just old school, but I'd rather wait an extra minute for a human who can handle a swap request.
