Tried to speed up a fuel leak check with a shop vac. Big mistake.
Last Tuesday I was doing a fuel drain check on a Cessna 172 and noticed a slow drip from the drain valve. Thought I'd be clever, grab a shop vac, and suck out the last bit of fuel to speed things up. Hooked it up, turned it on, and immediately heard a loud pop. The vac sucked the O-ring right out of the valve seal. Fuel started spraying everywhere across the hangar floor. Took me 20 minutes to find the O-ring under a toolbox. Ended up having to order a whole new drain valve assembly for $45. Never again. Anyone else try a shortcut that backfired this bad?

Wouldn't say that's a big deal, $45 and a learning lesson ain't bad.
