Unpopular opinion: the 3am call from my shop lead about a fuel leak in Fresno taught me more than any class
Two months into working line at a small shop in Fresno, I got a call at 3am from my lead. A Navajo had come in with a slow fuel drip at the sump drain. Instead of just tightening it, he walked me through checking the O-ring seat with a mirror and a flashlight before I touched anything. Turned out the drain valve body had a hairline crack, not a bad O-ring. If I'd just cranked it down it would have held on the ground and let go in flight. Cost us a $340 valve but maybe saved a lot more than that. Now I look at every leak like it's lying to me. How do you all train new guys to slow down on the obvious stuff?
