An installer in Tulsa ripped apart my zone plan on a ride along, and my callbacks went way down
About 5 months back I was doing a 2 story house in Tulsa with 34 zones and I was pretty proud of how fast I got it wired. A guy with 20 years in the trade rode along with me and said, plain as day, "You labeled these for you, not for the next guy." I had zones like Zone 7 and Zone 12 with nothing else written down, and he pointed out that when the homeowner calls in a year, nobody knows what Zone 12 even is without walking the whole house. He also said I was putting the panel in the closet because it was easy for me, not because the customer could reach it in a panic at 2 in the morning. So I changed two things. Now I label every zone with the room name and what it covers, like "Kitchen sliding door contact" or "Upstairs hall motion," and I write the same thing on the panel door chart in pen. I also started asking the homeowner where they actually walk at night before I pick the keypad spot. My callbacks for "wrong zone showing" dropped from about 3 a month to almost nothing, and honestly the ride along was worth more than any class I sat through. Curious what you all write on your zone lists, full room names or some shorthand you came up with?
