Appreciation post: my uncle told me to always carry a spare 12V battery in the van

I blew him off for years, but it saved a job in the suburbs last Thursday when the customer's panel backup was totally dead. What's the one piece of gear you were told to bring that you now never leave without?

Headlamps are great, but a good handheld light still has its place when you need to shine it into a tight spot without craning your neck.

Believe the old heads when they give you that one weird tip. Mine was a headlamp. Used to think my phone light was fine until I was in a dark crawlspace trying to hold a flashlight in my teeth. Now that thing lives on my hard hat. It sounds dumb until you really, really need both hands free and a beam pointed exactly where you're looking. Never making that mistake again.

Oh man, that is so true. I read this whole article once about how our brains work with light, and it said hands-free light actually lets you focus way better because you're not thinking about holding something steady. Honestly, using your phone light feels fine until you're in a spot like that and suddenly you're stuck. Tbh I started keeping a cheap headlamp in my car glove box after hearing stories like yours. It really is one of those things you don't get until you've been there.
