The Dade County school job that changed my wiring habits
Back in 2008 I did a retrofit at an old school outside Dade County, Florida. We had to run new contacts through cinder block walls and the existing fire alarm panel was a mess of old loops. I spent two days tracing a short that turned out to be a staple pinched over a pair of wires from a 70s install. After that, I started carrying a cheap toner and probe on every job, even small residential ones. It cost me about $60 at the time, but it saved me a full day on the next commercial bid. Do most of you guys bother with toner kits on routine installs, or is that just for service calls?
