Am I the only one who just learned how big a difference spray foam attic insulation makes?
I've lived in my Calgary bungalow for 7 years and always thought my attic insulation was fine. Then I got a quote from an energy auditor last month and he showed me the R-value in my attic was only R-20 instead of the R-50 they recommend for Alberta. I paid $3,200 to have spray foam done and my January gas bill dropped from $280 to $170. I honestly thought it was a scam until I saw the numbers on the audit report. Has anyone else noticed their utility bills change after upgrading attic insulation?

Did you see that CBC story last winter about how most older Calgary homes are way under insulated? That's what finally got me to book an audit too. My place was sitting at R-22 so I feel your pain on the wasted heating bills. The spray foam crew told me the old fiberglass was basically doing nothing because it was all packed down and wet from ice damming. It took about 6 months for the savings to really show up on my bills, but now my place holds heat way better and the upstairs doesn't feel like a freezer in the morning. Probably the best money I've spent on the house since I bought it.

Oh man, that CBC story got me too. Same thing here, my place was sitting around R-20 and the upstairs was always freezing while the furnace ran non stop. When they ripped out the old batts they were basically falling apart, felt like damp cotton balls. It took maybe 4 months before I really noticed the change on my gas bill, and now the bedroom stays warm all night without cranking the heat. Honestly the only thing I regret is not doing it sooner, the difference is night and day.
