Found that one weird spot in my attic that was leaking all the warm air out...

My house in Edmonton was always freezing on the north side no matter how high I cranked the furnace. After 2 years of this I finally crawled around up there with a flashlight on a cold morning and found a gap around the plumbing vent stack where the insulation had just been shoved aside. Sealed it up with some spray foam and a piece of rigid foam board. My heating bill dropped by about $60 the next month. Has anyone else found random gaps up there that made a big difference?

Oh man, found a big one around the attic hatch myself. Made a huge difference.

My own attic hatch turned out to be the biggest leak in the whole house. It's funny how we focus on windows and doors, but these hidden gaps are what really let all that conditioned air slip right out. Once I sealed that one spot, my heating bill dropped more than anything else I had tried.

Wait, are you sure sealing an attic hatch really made that much of a dent in your bill? I've sealed mine and didn't notice a huge change. Maybe my house is just leaky in other places. How do you even know for sure it was the hatch that was the problem and not something else you changed at the same time?
