Shoutout to the guy in Red Deer who warned me about the $800 water heater upsell
When my water heater went last month, a guy in Red Deer told me to get a second quote before signing anything, and I was sure he was just being cheap since the first company quoted me $1,900 for a tank swap. Turns out a local plumber did the same job for $1,100 with a better warranty, and the first quote included a bunch of "code upgrades" nobody could actually point to in the code book. Has anyone else run into this kind of padding on a quote, and how did you push back without the job getting delayed?
The code upgrade thing is a big one. I had an HVAC quote once that listed "permit coordination" and "code compliance review" as separate line items, and when I asked which code sections applied, the guy got real vague and started talking about "best practices." Told him I'd sign if he wrote the specific code numbers on the quote so I could verify them myself. Funny how fast those line items disappeared. Asking for everything in writing with actual specifics is the move, it puts the ball in their court and doesn't slow anything down because they usually just drop the fluff instead of arguing.
